Windows 7 – High CPU & Memory Usage : svchost & wuauserv

At some point in time you might get to the point where you notice that you PC is getting warm and the ventilator is running continuously ?

If you start to investigate it using the Task Manager, you will see that the CPU runs high on the svchost.exe  process?

But what does it mean ?

If you right click the svchost.exe you can select Go to Services …

It jumps to the services Tab. And highlights all related services linked to this process …

Once of them will be the wuauserv Service which is running.

Stop the Service and you will see the CPU drops immediately.

Next use the steps below to resolve the root cause of the issue.

Run as Administrator
net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

rd /s /q %windir%\softwaredistribution

net start bits

net start wuauserv

wuauclt.exe /detectnow

If this does not help install the once below :

I tried many other things, but no success … Sad smile

Finally this one did the trick ?

After installing and reboot it got stuck on this ? Sad smile

Solution :

Do a hard stop (press the power key to shut down) and restart in SAFE MODE

Once restarted I logged on again, and ‘voila’ Smile

The updates started coming in Smile Smile
