Outlook – Lookout search tool Add-on

I was so unpleasantly surprised to see this outlook disappear, when Microsoft took over the company that build it.

Many years back it was distributed for free, but development was not supported anymore Sad smile I use it everyday and can’t miss it, just like many of my colleagues.

This search tool is versatile and very fast to search Mail folders, Archive PST files, local files and network shares. What can a user want more ?

Lot’s of filter possibilities as well as custom filter settings.

But since outlook 2007 and higher was released you where not able to install the add-on anymore ! It would crash.

But … somewhere on the internet I found a workaround how to fix this.

After installing the Add-on you will see this error appearing.

The problem is that Outlook 2007 and higher ships the Outlook 2007 Office PIAs by default.  To Solve it open a command shell (as administrator), and issue the following commands:

Go to C:\Windows\Assembly\GAC

Rename both file to .OLD

Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook
Policy.11.0.Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook

Exclude the DELETED ITEMS folder if it crashes when indexing.

Enjoy.

PS: If you can’t find the tool anymore on the net drop me a message.

What about for Outlook 2013? Can we do the same things to get it to work? Is there a workaround for it? I really love this tool and use it all the time. Any advice would be appreciated as I just upgraded. Thanks.

Below link worked for me on Win XP and Win 7 and OL2007.

Just a note that it worked only after .Net Framework 2.0 was installed on all machines

    Thanx Mike and Vlad

  3. Hi all,

I am still in OL 2010 so I can’t help (yet). Hopefully someone else has some good news for us 🙂

    Hi Ben,

I use the alternative Lookeen. It may not be free but it works faster and was considered as follow-up for Lookout. Try the 14-days trial version on http://lookeen.de
    Best Regards, StefanS
Disclaimer: I work for Axonic, vendor of Lookeen.

    Hi all,
Has anyone been able to get Lookout working on OL 2013?

  6. Hi Babi,
I fully understand you don’t want to let go of this magnificent tool.

I can’t tell for sure, but you don’t have anything to lose. When you go through the procedure. Make sure you keep dll that you renamed as .OLD.

    Stop Outlook
Remame hem back as they where originally.
    Install the Add-In
    Start Outlook again.

I stopped using it when moving over to OL2010, and I still miss it everyday 😦
